Church of India (Русская Православная миссия в Индии) is a part of the 'Orthodox Church' - the One, Holy, Catholic, Apostolic Church" which holds the Catholic Faith, Orthodox Worship, Apostolic Order and Evangelical Witness in which resides the Fullness (Catholicity) of Christian truth because Christ established her on the day of Pentecost which is led by 9 Patriarchates. Indian Church is serving Christ and His Church under the Russian Orthodox Church and former Anglican Bishop Dr. Rohan (Polycarp) Nehamaiyah under whose leadership this mission came into Orthodox Church is taking care of the Church in India. This mission was received into Russian Orthodox Church in year 2012 through the kindness of His Eminence, Metropolitan Hilarion and His Eminence, Archbishop Mark of Yegoryevsk.
Church of India (Русская Православная миссия в Индии) is located in Maharashtra State of India and is the only Eastern Orthodox Church in India beside Greek Orthodox in Calcutta. There are 6 parishes in this mission and are dispersed in the eastern districts of Maharashtra State. Our ministry is specially focusing on the eastern region of Maharashtra State. All of our missionaries work as full time evangelists. Each of them evangelizing more than 4 counties which are very countryside. Many of the places have no transportation facility. Our congregations don't have church buildings so services are conducted in the huts of the Elders (missionaries). Our missionaries and church members are living in very poor condition and in constant fear of either religious fundamentalists or Maoist Terrorists (Naxalites). You may read about Naxal activity in this area on the U.S.A govt's website. Religious fundamentalists accuse falsely that Christians convert other religious or tribal people by force or by indulging them and under such false accusations they get license to kill and destroy Christians. Despite all the threats, geographical, and financial challenges the Church of India has maintained her continues presence in that region. There are many states in India where state governments have implemented Anti-Conversion Law according to which its illegal to evangelize and convert people to Christian faith. Many times this law is misused to persecute Christians. Till now this law is not implemented in our state but politicians of the religious fundamentalist political parties are trying to implement this law here.
The light of the Orthodox Christian faith was brought to India by Holy Apostle Thomas but after 300 years the Church established by St. Thomas fell into Nestorian heresy which further split into Monophycite and Papal heresies. But by the intercession of St. Thomas the Patron of India God brought back the light of Orthodoxy in the land of India which was made holy by the work and martyrdom of St. Thomas. Orthodoxy is growing day by day among both Roman Catholic-Protestant denominations and pagans. There is no priest in this mission that's why by the provision made by His Eminence Archbishop Mark 2 priests from Russia come once a year for the Divine Liturgy, at all other times Typica is served by the Elders (Missionaries) in their receptive congregations.
